Texas Prison Guard Requirement & Qualifications

  • You must be a citizen of the U.S., or an alien authorized to work in the U.S.
  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must possess a High School Diploma from an accredited senior high school or equivalent, or a state or military-issued General Education Development (GED) certificate. You must not be on active duty in the military, unless on terminal leave. (Applicants may screen if they are within 6 months of eligibility.)
  • You must not have been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions.
  • You must never have been convicted of a felony.
  • You must never have been convicted of a drug-related offense.
  • You must never have been convicted of an offense involving domestic violence.
  • You cannot have had a Class A misdemeanor conviction within the past 10 years.
  • You cannot have had a Class B misdemeanor conviction within the past 5 years.
  • You cannot be on probation for any criminal offense.
  • You cannot have any criminal charges pending or have an outstanding warrant.

  • You must pass the TDCJ Pre-Employment Test.

    Important Testing Information

    You will have two attempts to pass the pre-employment test within a one-year period. If you are unsuccessful on the second attempt, you will be eligible to reapply after one year from the date of your original test.
  • You must pass the TDCJ Drug Test
  • Male applicants, age 18 through 25, must provide proof of Selective Service registration or exemption from Selective Service registration. If you are not registered, you may register by clicking the following link: https://www.sss.gov/RegVer/wfRegistration.aspx

Part-Time Correctional Officer Salary

Note: New part-time Correctional Officers attend the Training Academy for 6 weeks and on-the-job training at their unit of assignment for 2 weeks on a full-time basis. During this period, officers receive $2,319.05 per month. For any remaining part of the 2nd month of employment, the part-time salary is $1,159.52 per month.

Physical Agility Test

To successfully complete the test, you must accumulate 75 points. If you are unable to perform one of the tasks, you maycompensate by gaining additional points in the push-up, sit-up, or deep squat portions of the test.

  • Push-ups 1 minute
  • 45-lb Weight 30 yards in 1 minute
  • Sit-ups 1 minute – as many as1 point for each sit-upvariespossible
  • Deep Squats 1 minute – as many as1 point for each squatvariespossible
  • Ladder Climb Up/down continuously4 points for each up/down20for 5 times
  • ¼ Mile Run/Walk 5 ½ minutes3:00 minutes or less
